Kerri Walsh Jennings: 135 Wins and a Vision for What's Next

Kerri Walsh Jennings is not just the greatest beach volleyball player of all time; she is rebuilding the sport’s entire ecosystem—from K-12 development and collegiate scholarships to a unified professional league that finally lets American athletes build careers at home.

Kerri Walsh Jennings: 135 Wins and a Vision for What's Next

Last week at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York, a 152-year-old summer community that has hosted presidents, Nobel laureates, and some of the most consequential thinkers in American history, Kerri Walsh Jennings walked onto a stage during "Icons and Instigators" week. She was there to talk about the state of women's sports alongside another Olympic gold medalist. She was not introduced as a volleyball player. She was introduced as someone building something.

That distinction matters more than most people realize.

Because Walsh Jennings is not just the greatest beach volleyball player who ever lived. She is the person who looked at the sport that gave her everything and decided it was not enough to have played it. She needed to fix what was broken about it.

Santa Clara to Stanford

Born August 15, 1978, in Santa Clara, California, Walsh Jennings grew up in one of the most volleyball-rich regions in the country. She arrived at Stanford University and immediately became the kind of player who bends a program's trajectory. She helped the Cardinal win back-to-back NCAA championships in 1996 and 1997, earning MVP honors in both finals. She became only the second player in college volleyball history to be named All-American first team four consecutive years.

Four years. Every single season, the best in the country.

She made the U.S. national indoor team and traveled to the 2000 Sydney Olympics. The Americans finished fourth. Close enough to taste a medal. Not close enough to hold one.
