These New Member Classes have become one of my favorite ministry activities at Crossings Community. I just wanted to share my excitement and encouragement with you. We are so very blessed to have a great community of people who welcome and love all of those who walk in the door. We are also blessed to have a group of people who love their neighbors. My first conversations with new people are often so encouraging as they describe the environment at Crossings Community as warm, welcoming, and loving.
Sometimes we never have the opportunity to see those guests again. Maybe they were expecting something completely different than what they found when they arrived… maybe the music was just not right for them…. or likely the pastor said something offensive and said it for a very long time. I have seen these realities play out many times and it is always my prayer, and often my words to the guests, that they will find a church home in the Katy community in which they can grow deep in their relationship with Jesus Christ and serve in a way that furthers His mission here.
However, by God’s grace, people do return and often feel a desire to join our community of Christ-followers through membership. Our two-step membership process begins with the New Member Class where we are able to give a snap shot into the vision of Crossings Community as well as some nuts and bolts regarding how we do things. My favorite aspect of these gatherings are the questions which get asked. I love the questions because they speak deeply about the history of the individual. There are elements of their life’s story which are embedded into the questions they ask. Sometimes they are trying to understand the function of church membership for the first time. Other times they are trying to figure out how Crossings Community might not replicate the mistakes they experienced at another church in their past. Many times, they are wrestling with how God has uniquely created them to be a part of the vision of Crossings Community. I love all of these questions because they display the work of God in our lives.
Finally, I love these gatherings because they mark the beginning of a new journey. Personally, I never could have expected the blessings that I have felt through the people God has brought to our church. It is such a joy to witness the discomforts of a first visit transform into the joys of leadership in the heart of a man or women of God. Then to see relationships take shape within the church community… relationships that journey through difficulty together, as well as victory. I am blessed to have a birds eye view of how God is working in the hearts of people and in the body of His church, Crossings Community Church.
Friends, be encouraged by the work of God around you. Whether you are here in Katy, TX, with us at Crossings Community or in some other location, God loves His church and created it to beautifully display His glory to a hurting world.
